The principle of bracing and propping is to prevent the loss of a trees limb that is likely to fail by bracing it to a sound limb or propping the limb from ground. If you would like to maintain a special tree's appearance, a tree under threat of weather damage or a veteran tree we offer expert advice on how to do this safely. We recommend that an inspection of any brace or prop should be carried out from the ground annually and a more thorough climbing inspection every 5 years. Bracing and or propping could prolong the life of the tree by making it safer and reduce the need for any other intervention.
Coppicing involves cutting back selected trees almost to ground level, on a regular cycle normally between 7 to 20 years depending on the tree species. One of the advantages of coppicing is that you do not need to replant the trees every time you cut. By repeatedly cutting the trees their lifespan can be greatly increased. This type of tree maintenance work is good for creating sustainable firewood, it is also good for wildlife and biodiversity.
Trees with cavities have potential to fail causing harm to people and property. The action required to deal with cavities all depends on the location of the tree, location of cavity, age of tree and species. By assessing these factors we can determine the overall risk of the problem and determine the safety and the future health of the tree. There are many ways to treat cavities some of which are more invasive than others. Initial treatment to cavities would be to clear out any lose debris within the cavity. This material acts like a sponge holding water in the cavity, not allowing it to dry out. Its also allows other organisms to flourish such as wood rotting fungi which can cause more decay. Cavities can provide habitat to tree dwelling creature such as bats and owls. Arborist have a legal duty in regards to the disturbance of bats under the wildlife and countryside act 1981. They must be considered when carrying out any work to a tree with cavities.
